Parent University Mid-Winter Events - Feb 16th
Published: Wed, Feb 4, 2015, 09:48PM CST

CISD has revamped Parent University to help support parents throughout the year. Parents will have an opportunity to learn in a variety of ways, including guest speakers, online seminars, mini workshops, video tutorials.

There are 2 events scheduled for the evening of February 16th.

Global Communication (Alan November): Monday, February 16 (6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Coppell High School Auditorium)
Learning is social. An audience of one, the teacher, is no longer sufficient to prepare students for success in the global economy. Now is the time for educators to tap into safe and moderated social web-based tools to expand the audience for student work. At the same time, we can provide role models of appropriate, ethical behavior on the Web. Find out how building learning communities across all subject areas can encourages students to take greater responsibility for the quality of their work and to make contributions to other students.

Love & Logic (Dr. Fay): Monday, February 16 (7:00-8:30 p.m. at Coppell Middle School West Auditorium)
“I don’t understand it. The techniques my parents used so effectively just don’t seem to work with kids today.” Does this statement sound familiar to you? A lot of parents today are wondering what to do with their kids and are frustrated because the old techniques just don’t seem to get the job done. Dr. Fay teaches us that we should “lock in our empathy, love, and understanding” prior to telling kids what the consequences of their actions will be. The Parenting the Love and Logic Way™ curriculum teaches parents how to hold their kids accountable in this special way. This Love and Logic method causes the child to see their parent as the “good guy” and the child’s poor decision as the “bad guy.” When done on a regular basis, kids develop an internal voice that says, “I wonder how much pain I’m going to cause for myself with my next decision?” Kids who develop this internal voice become more capable of standing up to peer pressure.
